Opeth - Pale Communion

Backlog: 572 albums | 7,086 songs | 25:01:24:23 running time

Like I said, the actual backlog is technically bigger than this but I haven't ripped or imported any of the stacked-up purchases into my library, so I'm cheating this shit hard. It's like cheating at solitaire.

Fuck, it's pathetic.

Backlog: 578

At this point, I'm thinking I'm going to do the complete backlog line every other week.

Slower than expected week, owing to some bad congestion days during which I did not listen to shit. Air purifier has been ordered and will be in later in the week, so we can start experimenting and see if that makes a difference.

Also it's Games Done Quick week so expect listening to be slower this week than last. As is customary, my yearly plans -- whatever they might be -- never properly start until after AGDQ's over, which is gonna be next Sunday.

All the news that's fit to print, right there -- i.e., very little.

Backlog: 608.

Too lazy to do the full backlog data this week. We'll do it again next week.

Observations? "Powerviolence" is a stupid name for a subgenre, but "fast and furious metallic hardcore" is one of my go-to jams over the last couple of years and Nails are (were?) really good at it.

Zedi Forder is the wild card of the week: if you're into Pain of Salvation, Jolly, etc.? Check Isolation out, it's probably got something to your taste on it and it is (was?) pay-what-you-want at Bandcamp when I picked it up a couple of months ago.

Pointless side opinion: I no longer give a fraction of a shit about separating EPs from full-lengths on best-of lists. I never really have, but more than ever, 2020 has driven home that there are so many more significant things to do than worry about all of those arbitrary bullshit distinctions.

Trying a more comprehensive backlog listing to properly sound the depths of the massive musical hole I have dug for myself.

Again, as noted, I had a bunch of orders and things which were arriving and they're almost all arrived.

Rough listening plan for this week: to knock down another giant box set and, perhaps, to cross off at least one album from every letter remaining in the backlog.

Things should go down from here fairly quickly, but I guess we'll find out next week, won't we.

Wild Card of the Week: Cursed Mantis. The band self-describes as "synthgrind" which in this case does basically mean it's shards of death metal and grindcore colliding with brief bursts of synthwave while a beauty-and-the-beast vocal team alternately trills operatically about alien mantises roaming the galaxy in search of cheese and barks out random gurgling thoughts about the mantises. No idea where I read about this band, but it's definitely the sort of singular Dadaism I'm always down to make room for in my musical diet.

Backlog: 592.

The backlog got very large this year as I ordered things and then went whole weeks barely listening to a note. We have started making in-roads.

I also have a ton of things on order and/or sitting on my desk or in the garage decontaminating which will balloon the backlog back out again, but my rule of thumb for the moment is "we're not going any higher than this number, right now, ever again" and we'll see how long I can walk that line.

Blood pressure remains in the mid-120s-to-mid-130s/70s range, so that's looking good.

I am feeling the strain of all the horror about to be unleashed even as the first wave of vaccines could be two weeks away from getting deployed.

Personal life updates:

Last Wednesday early morning, I had what they call a hypertensive crisis, by which I mean my blood pressure had redlined in the 180/120 range. I had none of the obvious symptoms, although a separate symptom I'd been showing throughout the week before might actually have directly correlated. My doctor doubled my blood pressure medication dosage -- from 10mg to 20mg -- and so far it's been sliding back down towards acceptable since.

Today's lowest reading so far was 129/78 with a pulse of 70, for instance.

Which is not so bad.

(I'm pinning this mainly on the fact that up until March I was routinely walking between three and five miles a day and then my well of activity dried all the way up. Since then, it's been months of relentless and uninterrupted stress and anxiety and tension.)

Still playing Phasmophobia once or twice a week with my brother and a couple of his friends. A good time if you've got the computer (and microphone) to play it and the $14.99 to buy it on Steam. If you do check it out, let me know, and we can hunt some fucking ghosts!

Have been watching a lot of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 on Shout Factory TV and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -- which I have never seen -- on Netflix. Enjoying DS9 a lot so far.

If this forthcoming week finds me listening to as much music as this week, or more, then you can expect to see the backlog counter return. When you're not moving stuff through the system, there's just no point in charting progress, you know?

It's Games Done Quick week, so it'll probably be back to extreme low traffic like... one out of every two weeks since this mess began.

This is still the wrong art for the Dame EP I was listening to, and I still don't care enough to fix it.

So tired. Very tired.

Also, political opinion I absolutely, positively did not believe I would ever find myself typing, but here we are in this year of genuine social and psychological meltdown and here I am:

Seems to me the Biden-Harris campaign might want to consider seeing if Taylor Swift will act as a surrogate for the rest of this election season.

She is: on their side on the issues, articulate about the issues, and already a figure of gigantic media/tabloid obsession and coverage so if you have your campaign's plans coming out of her mouth in interview appearances before noon, half the known world will know all about them before dinner time.

If we're gonna continue to live in a tabloid hell for the foreseeable future, I say, use it.

As per last week, after the first six albums, it's "I heard a bunch of random songs off of these and it was enough to get in there".

Replies still percolating.

Also, that's the wrong cover for the Dame but I don't care enough to update it.

The bottom row is individual tracks, not full albums.

Good enough.

Still out here.

Wishing like hell that for all of the fucking pushing and straining and supporting, something good will finally be able to shift away some of the misery by which we're all being ground to dust.

I'm so tired of crazy, stupid, evil bastards fucking up everything -- and at this point, "everything" is not even an exaggeration, just the basic fact.

Fuck some people.

You know which people and you know why.

I used to enjoy being as nocturnal as I am because the world's usually quiet in the middle of the night.

These days, that's all to the bad because it means there's nothing around to drown out the noise of all the horrors, fears, and anxieties which define our present circumstance.

Or the realization that no matter what happens, (and almost) no matter what we do, it's only going to get worse from here on a regular basis for at least the next six months before things can even begin to get less monstrous.
